Published Nov. 15, 2010 - Chanute, KS Charles Otis Carter Jr., 94, passed away Friday, November 12, 2010, at the Guest Home Estates V, in Iola, Kansas. Charles was born in Thedford, Nebraska on October 23, 1916, the son of Charles Otis Carter Sr. and Ellen A. (McCawley) Carter. He graduated from Morrowville High School, Morrowville, Kansas in 1934. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Kansas State University in 1940 and his Master's Degree from Pittsburg State University in 1967. He served his country during WWII in the United States Army. Charles was united in marriage to Helen Ferrier on April 2, 1944. They later divorced. He later married Joan Turner on July 2, 1963 in Chanute, Kansas. She survives of the home. Charles was a Vocational-Agriculture Teacher at the Chanute High School for 22 years and then taught Biology at the Neosho County Community College for 13 years until his retirement. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Chanute Historical Society, Chanute Area Retired School Personnel, Tree Board in Chanute, American Legion, V.F.W., Genealogical Society, and published six books on genealogy. Survivors include his wife Joan; his children, Phillip F. Carter and wife Diana of Pittsburg, KS, Ruth E. Luthi-Carter and husband Patrick, of Preverenges, Switzerland, Carolyn Robinson and husband Anthony of Prairie Village, KS, Paul T. Carter and Glenda Lacey of Chanute, KS, and Charlotte S. Ecoff and husband Doug of Parsons, KS; grandchildren, Christopher D. Carter, Jennifer J. Foreback, Calvin C. Robinson, Simon C. Robinson, Samantha C. Robinson, Haley N. Carter, Chelsie D. Wheeler, Laura C. Luthi, and Anna K. Ecoff; great-grandchildren, Savannah Carter, Cohwen Wheeler, Joryn Wheeler, Kennedy Foreback, and Kiana Foreback; a sister, Marcella R. Hunt of Lincoln, NE; and a brother, Louis L. Carter of Morrowville, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Loeva A. Carter; three sisters, Rose I. Schessler, Mary Ellen Uhlrich, and Mildred A. Blaha; and a brother, Mark W. Carter. Funeral services will be Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church in Chanute. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Chanute, KS. Memorials in his name may be made to the First Presbyterian Church and may be left with the funeral home. Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
