***************************************** Donald Matthew Emanuel, 94, beloved husband of Dolores Emanuel for 71 years, died August 14th at Nye Legacy, Fremont, Neb. Mr. Emanuel was a longtime Fremont business and community leader. He owned Emanuel Printing in Fremont until retiring in 1989. An active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and schools, he was past president of the Bergan High School Booster Club, and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Council 1497 and past Grand Knight.As a community leader, Mr. Emanuel served on the board of directors for the Fremont Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Business Association. He was a past representative of the Eastern Nebraska Human Services Agency. A 45 year member of Alcoholics Anonymous, he was a past president of Chapter Five. Mr. Emanuel sponsored countless community members over the years in A.A. A decorated veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II, he served in the 792 Bomb Squadron of the 478th Bombardment Wing of the 20th Air Force where he was a crew chief on a B29 Bomber. His bombardment wing was stationed at Kharagpur, India, and later, was in the Szechwan Province in China and on Tinian Island in the South Pacific. He served in the China-Burma-India and South Pacific Theaters of War. His battles and campaigns included the Air Offensive of Japan, China, Eastern Mandates, Central Burma, India Burma, Air Combat of Palembang and Sumatra. He was decorated with six Bronze Stars, the Distinguished Unit Badge, the Victory Medal, three overseas Bars and the Good Conduct Medal. He served his country from February 1943 to November 1945. He served as Commander of the Nebraska China-Burma-India Veteran’s Association from 1989-1999. Mr. Emanuel was born Oct. 9, 1922, in rural North Bend, Neb., to Matthew and Ellen (nee Brennan) Emanuel. He attended Rural School District #71 in Dodge County, Guardian Angels High School in West Point, and graduated from North Bend High School in 1940. Early in his career, he was owner and publisher of the Leigh World Newspaper in Leigh, Neb., where he was past president of the Leigh Volunteer Fire Department. He also worked as a printer at the Fremont Guide and Tribune and the Fort Collins Coloradoan prior to owning Emanuel Printing. He married Dolores Ann (nee Ullrich) Emanuel on Jan. 14, 1946, in North Bend. She survives him. Other survivors include two sons, Dan Emanuel, Omaha; and Martin (Florence) Emanuel, Centreville, Va.; six daughters, Kathy (Harry) Shehtanian, Saratoga Springs, Calif.; Mary Pat Cheshier, Omaha; Ellen (Ron) Leifeld, Alva., Fla.; Margaret Springer, Dallas Texas; Joan (Tom) O’Gorman, Omaha; and Suzy (Tom) McDonald, Omaha; 24 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Monica Connor, Omaha; two brothers, Bill and Lawrence Emanuel, both Fremont; and three sisters, Catherine Hageman, Fremont; Agnes Lewis, Denver, Colo.; and Delores Rief, Wisner. Funeral Mass will be 10 A.M., Friday, August 18, 2017 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fremont. The Rev. Fathers Eliot Schwer and Dave Reeson will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday from 5 P.M. to 8 P.M. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary starting at 7 P.M.
