Bio

Maurice Marshell Mikeska was called to Heaven Wednesday, July 25, 2007. He was 80 years old. He was the son of John and Francis Mikeska of Taylor. Maurice was 2nd to the youngest of nine children. He is survived by his wife, Georgia; daughter, Laurice Vacek and husband Joe D.; son, Nick Mikeska and special friend Dawn Allison of El Campo; son, Gerry and wife Donna Mikeska, of El Campo; grandchildren, Ashley Merta and husband Eric of El Campo, Alicia Vacek of Houston and Cody Vacek of El Campo; brothers, Clem Mikeska of Temple and Jerry Mikeska of Columbus; and sisters, Val Lindeman and Annie Jozwiak, both of Temple. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Francis Mikeska; brothers, Mike, Rudy, and Louis; and his sister, Martha Vanecek. He was a graduate of Round Rock High School and served in the Korean War as a mess sergeant in the United States Army. He was a very proud past faithful navigator of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly 1131. Maurice, Georgia, and Laurice moved to El Campo on June 19, 1955 to continue his passion of the BBQ and meat market business. He was thankful to the city of El Campo and considered it a privilege to serve his customers, whom he considered his friends, a hearty plate of BBQ. Many times he was heard saying "El Campo has always been very good to me" and "what makes me happy is a good day of business." Besides the BBQ business, he enjoyed his farming operation, which was a reflection of his youth. Maurice, his six brothers, and their father, became involved in the meat business by running a meat club. There they would travel from farm to farm weekly butchering calves and distributing meat. This enabled him to teach the FFA class even though he was a student. Besides his love of work and serving the public, Maurice enjoyed to hunt and fish. This is reflected in the mounted game and fish that adorn the walls of his restaurants. Maurice cherished his family and his Catholic Faith. He was thankful to God for surviving a major illness in 1992, and considered himself blessed for 15 additional years. Pallbearers are Cody Vacek, Eric Merta, Tim Mikeska, Steven Mikeska, Mark Mikeska, Benny Vanecek, Efrain "Moose" Rodriguez and Lawrence Knebel.
