YOAKUM: Otelia "Tillie" Chilek Mudd passed from this life on Saturday, November 5, 2016. She was born on December 27, 1921, at home, in Hochheim, Texas to parents Fred and Mary Vinklarek Chilek. As a young child her language was Czech, only learning English when she started school. Upon completing high school, at St. Joseph's in Yoakum (in 1940), Tillie, as she was called, attended Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio. She enjoyed her time there and made life long friends. Tillie married J.E. Mudd on December 6, 1943 in St. Agnes Catholic Church in San Antonio, TX. When he shipped off to war she continued to live with her parents and worked at First State Bank. On Sundays she taught CCD classes at the Catholic church. Tillie was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the America and the Pink Ladies Auxiliary. Tillie was allowed to join her husband in North Africa in 1947. Upon their return from overseas Tillie and J.E. began a family having three sons and three daughters. Tillie was an excellent seamstress and made many items of clothing for her family. These included prom dresses, bridesmaid dresses, and clothes for school plays. In addition to this talent it could be said that Tillie had a green thumb. She had large gardens in the spring and fall and preserved or canned all that she didn't give away. Her flower beds contained many varieties of flowers but roses were her specialty. She was an excellent cook and loved to bake kolaches and sausage rolls. Growing up on the Guadalupe River Tillie learned to fish at an early age, with her dad, and this love followed her through life. She was a good fisherman. She also liked to play bridge and belonged to a couple of bridge clubs. Her greatest love was having her family come to visit. She loved her children and grandchildren a great deal. Praying came easy to Tillie and she set aside early morning and afternoon to say her formal prayers. Preceding Tillie in death were her parents, her husband J.E. (October 21, 2016), infant son Reginald, brothers, Johnnie, Alphonse, and Joe Chilek, and her sister Agnes Matocha. Visitation from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 followed by a 6:30 p.m. rosary at Thiele-Cooper Funeral Home. Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Matthew Huehlefeld officiating. Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
