Dallas Morning News, Section 3, Page 3 Monday, June 8, 1953 MAN GIVES UP IN SHOOTING A 35 year old man, who said he had been a Kentucky schoolteacher, surrendered at the Sheriff's office early Sunday in connection with the slaying of Joe Burns, 40, of 1720 Hickory, earlier in the night. "I hear you are looking for me for the killing of a man at Johnny's Place, 2100 South Harwood" he told the Sheriff's deputies. Burns, a roofer, was shot between the eyes before a crowd of thirty patrons in the tavern. The gunman escaped with a companion. D.L. McBride, 31, a bouncer at the tavern, said the gunman and Burns had trouble earlier in the evening as to which would sit close to the bandstand in the tavern. He said he thought the affair had been settled until the shooting occurred. _____________________ Dallas Morning News, Section 3, page 14 Tuesday, June 9, 1953.
