Newman Smith was the son of Abner Smith and Siddy Busbee. He married Mary Ann Harris, and they had 11 children together. In the 1850 Itawamba Mississippi Census, they are listed as --Henry Smith age 19 John Henry Smith --Nathaniel Smith age 16 [Newman Nathaniel Smith] --Riley Smith age 13 [Riley S Smith] --C C Smith age 12 [Christopher Columbus Smith] --William Smith age 10 [William Smith] --Saloma Smith age 9 [Saloma Smith] --Mary A E Smith age 8 [Mary Ann L Smith] --James A Smith age 6 [James A Smith] --Thomas Smith age 3 [Thomas Smith] --A John Smith age 1 [John Abner Smith] Newman moved to Texas and is belived to have lived on land owned by his father where the present Black Jack Cemetery stands. According to Max Krumche's book about Abner Smith, Newman was the first person to be buried in the Black Jack Cemetery.
