Bio

Bethel Smith came to Texas in 1832/1833 from Alabama with his father, Abner Smith , a Primitive Baptist preacher who obtained a Spanish land grant in what is now Burleson Co., Texas. According to a story on Ancestry.com dated April 1, 1836, Bethel fought in the Battle of San Jacinto, serving as a volunteer under Captain Ratcliff (see second col., seventh name on list). This information agrees with the inscription on his grave marker, stating that he fought for Texas independence in the Battle of San Jacinto. --- Husband of Eliza Ann Franks, m. 1839, Washington Co., Texas.
