Liebenthal -- Bertha Schaffer, 83, died Jan. 19, 1999, at Medical Lodge, Kinsley. She was born July 4, 1915, near Victoria, the daughter of Joseph and Katie Frank Herl. A Rush County resident until 1998, She was a homemaker. She belonged to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Liebenthal. On May 2, 1932, she married Philip Schaffer at Liebenthal. He died Jan. 31, 1985. Survivors include: five sons Eugene, Robert and William, all of Topeka, James, Overland Park, and Archie, Hays; a brother, Robert Herl, Munjor; three sisters, Albina Schuckman, La Crosse, and Fayva Schuckman and Leona Harold, both of Salina; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren She was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Herl. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today at Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse. Funeral Mass will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church Liebenthal, with Father Benjamin Martin presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m to 9 pm today and 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home Burial will follow in the St. Joseph's Cemetery, Liebenthal.
