From The Abilene (TX) Reporter , Thursday, Oct. 20, 1988 ************* From First 100 Years Nolan County Texas , Page 188 published in 1986 by the Nolan County Genealogical Society (transcribed with permission) August and Anna (Sauer) Gabler Family Arthur August Gabler was born in Gonzales County near Cheapside, Texas to Jacob and Ida Gabler on October 8, 1897. Anna was also born near Cheapside to Fredrich and Pauline Sauer on February 27, 1894. They new each other from early childhood. Both families moved to the Roscoe area in 1908 by train and settled in the South Champion Community. Again, they were neighbors. Both families were engaged in farming - their fields joined each other and this is where courtship began. They both picked cotton and they'd meet each other at the dividing fence to say "I Love YOU". His mother would watch from her upstairs window with her binoculars to see if they were picking or talking. Bicycles were their transportation. Their education was not considered the best - but who can beat a self-taught man; grades were called Readers then - Arthur finished 1-1/2 Reader and Anna went through the 4th Reader. They got married on August 25, 1917 and have celebrated their 65th anniversary. She still has her wedding dress which she sewed for $2.00. Her wedding ring she is still wearing. For their honeymoon, they traveled by train to Fort Worth and found a job picking cotton for $.35 a hundred pounds. Lived in a chicken brooder house - moving the chickens out as they moved in. As Anna recently said, "It was the best honeymoon I ever had." One month later, they returned to Roscoe and lived with his parents for a year. In 1919, they owned one horse, two mules and one cow. From their savings, they bought a little land west of the ole' Gabler place and moved to a two-room house - kitchen and bedroom. In 1920, they built their first two-story home using only a hammer, screw-driver, saw and a square. Arthur got the frames and woodwork cut at night while the mules rested. This home burned in 1959. Arthur served as school trustee for many years at Highland Schools and he made a trip to Detroit and drove back the first school bus. He drove the bus while Anna shucked bundle feed, raised turkeys and did the chores at home. Built their second home in 1943 four miles west of Roscoe, with rocks from many parts of Texas as well as California. The rainbow rock from California can be split any direction and one can still see a rainbow. It was on this farm he had the county's first irrigation well. Retiring from farming, he built and moved into Roscoe in 1974, where they now reside together at age 87 and 90. Active members of First Salem Lutheran Church of Roscoe, he has been supportive in the church first held at the Brownlee School to its new location at Roscoe. They had hardships, but together their life was cemented with many, many blessed events: as having one son, O.C., and two daughters, Mrs. Harold (Gladys) Johnson of Sweetwater, and Mrs. Raymond (Ina) Althof of Roscoe. Also seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Family Line: A.A. Gabler Anna Gabler O.C.
