LOYALTY RANGER Joseph Milton Blackwell was born in Polk County, North Carolina to John M. Blackwell and Louessa Jane Giles. His middle name is sometimes found spelled Melton. He stood 6ft. 2in. tall, had gray eyes, gray hair and a dark complexion. He was married to Wilma Augusta Key July 5, 1891 in Fannin County, Texas. They had nine children, two of whom were twins. They were Maude, Martha, Ina, Andrew and Ozie, Lola, Oma, Clara and Pauline. Joseph was a farmer and also became a deputy sheriff in Leonard, Fannin County. He joined the Texas Rangers as a LOYALTY RANGER from June 16, 1918 until February 1919. Loyalty Rangers worked undercover as a State Secret Service under the Hobby Act of 1918. In 1930, Joseph was still a farmer, raising cotton in Fannin County, Texas. Joseph Milton Blackwell died April 6, 1948 in Leonard, Fannin County, Texas He is buried in the East Shady Grove Cemetery, in Leonard.
