The Minden (La) Press-Herald (Dec. 21, 1976) School board member A.J. Burns succumbs SHONGALOO - A.J. Burns, longtime member of the Webster Parish School Board, passed away in the Minden Medical Center Monday, December 20. A lifelong resident of Shongaloo, he was born September 29, 1907, the son of Mr. and Mrs. I.L. Burns. Mr. Burns would have completed 18 years as a member of the Webster Parish School Board on the night of his death. He was a veteran of World War II, having reached the rank of major. He was a graduate of Louisiana State University, and he was an instructor of veterans in the farm training program prior to becoming agency manager for Southern Farm Bureau Insurance. Mr. Burns was most active in the restoration of Germantown Colony and the Webster Parish Bicentennial Celebration. He was a member and a deacon of the Mt. Paran Baptist Church of Shongaloo. He was also a member of the Shongaloo Lions club. Mr. Burns is survived by his widow, Mildred O'Bier Burns, three sons, Kerry O. Burns, Minden; Capt. Henry L. Burns, Hawaii; and A.J. Burns, Jr., Monroe; four sisters, Mrs. Walter Bailey, Shongaloo; Mrs. P.V. Adkins, Shongaloo, Mrs. Murphy McEachern, Shongaloo; and Mrs. Ben Taylor, Choudrant; four brothers, Pleasant Burns, Shongaloo; Holland Burns and Robert Burns, Springhill; and Joe Dee Burns, Jonesboro; and five grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.
