Bio

Frank Elmer Young February 2, 1930 - March 1, 2026 U.S. Veteran Frank Elmer Young, Sr. passed away on March 1, 2026 at Northern Oaks Living and Rehabilitation Center in Abilene, Texas. He had lived most of his life in Nolan County, either near the community of Nolan or in Sweetwater. Frank was born at home on February 2, 1930 in Bailey County, Texas. He was the 9th of 12 children, born to Joseph Bruno Young, Sr. and Ollie Bernice Harvey Young. He is survived by his sister, Lottie Josephine Young Brown; three of his children, Ronald Maurice "Ron or Ronnie" Young (Sherry), Richard Glenn "Ricky" Young (Vickie), Cynthia Lynn "Cindy" Young Lara (Alfonso) and daughter-in-law Jana Gay Ivy Young; his grandchildren Mickey Glenn Young (Kyria), Robin Kristine Young (Jeremy Glick), Michael Tobin "Toby" Young (Amy), Daniel Scott Young (Megan), Nicki Dalenn Young Salas (Joe), Bo Tyler Young (Lauren), Joseph Dickie "Joe" Young (Shana Fein), Zachary Ryan Lara and Kyle Aaron Lara. He is also survived by 17 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren who lovingly called him "Gran Gran". He was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Ima Gearlene "Gerry" Woodard Young, whom he married on June 2, 1951 in Sweetwater, Nolan County, Texas. He was also preceded in death by his son Frank Elmer "Frankie" Young, Jr. and his siblings Martha Valeta Young Davis, Joseph Bruno "J. B." Young, Jr., Harvey Dee Young, Verna Ruth Young Willis, Roger Paul Young, Evelyn Bernice Young Geron, Johnny Cecil Young, James Herbert Young, Jessie Eugene Young, and Samuel Edwin Young. He retired from Lone Star Cement in Maryneal, Texas in 1989 after working there for 35 years. He served our country in the United States Air Force and worked as a cook while he was enlisted. He would sometimes use his Air Force cookbook to make up a batch of something, doing the math in his head to reduce the quantities. He was well-known for his Pecan Pound Cake, for which he won a blue ribbon, and never missed an opportunity to bring one to a family gathering. His pride and joy was cultivating and growing his pecan trees and tending to his "minners" (minnows) in his concrete tank on his 30 acre property. He loved caring for his family's horses and his grandchildren and many of his great nieces and nephews have fond memories of going to his farm to ride the horses. For many years, he enjoyed catching rattlesnakes and taking them to the annual Rattlesnake Round-Up in Sweetwater. When his boys were young, he helped coach their baseball teams. The family is very appreciative of the love and care he was given at Northern Oaks Living and Rehabilitation Center and by Kinder Hearts Hospice in his last few months of life. They went above and beyond the call of duty in their care. Visitation will take place at McCoy Funeral Home on Friday, March 6, 2026 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held, on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. and is also at McCoy Funeral Home, 401 E. 3rd Street in Sweetwater, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Veterans organization of your choice.
