Ex-Nolan County Tax Official Dies Sweetwater - John Calvin (Bud) Montgomery, Jr., 89, former Nolan County tax assessor-collector and former sheriff of Cochran County, died Monday at 12:30 p.m. at Star Nursing Home in Merkel. He had been a patient there for the past month. Funeral is set for 3 p.m. Wednesday in Sweetwater in the Cate-Spencer Chapel. Paul Rogers, minister of Fourth and Elm St. Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will be in Sweetwater Cemetery. Nephews will be pallbearers. Mr. Montgomery was born March 8, 1874 in Cherokee, Tex., and moved to Nolan County in 1880. He married Bettie B. Harrington in 1896. They made their home near Sweetwater in the Bitter Creek community until 1916, when they moved to New Mexico. He was Nolan County Tax Assessor-Collector in 1908-1909. From 1932 to 1936 he was Sheriff of Cochran County. He was the son of Nolan County's first sheriff, John Calvin Montgomery, Sr. He had lived in Dublin for the past 20 years. Survivors are his wife of Dublin; three sons, L. V. of El Paso, Richard Virgil of New York City and Lee R. of Dublin; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Ruby M. Sanders of Sweetwater.
