Bio

Virtus was born on December 15, 1931, to Anthony and Christina (Tiefenthaler) Pittman in Coon Rapids, IA. He attended school in Wall Lake and was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Virtus was inducted into the United States Army March 18, 1953. He served in the 201st Army Field Artillery Battalion as a track vehicle mechanic, earning an Army Ocupational Medal (Germany) and National Defense Medal/Marksmanship Badge. He was honorably discharged on August 19, 1954. On February 17, 1969, Virtus was united inmarriage to Betty Poppe. They made their home in Wall Lake. Virtus was a mechanic for Neil Richardson in Wall Lake in his early years, formed Pittman Construction Company and farmed. He was very good at rebuilding motors. He proudly served the Citizens of Wall Lake as council member for 34 years, and was honored when they presented him with a plaque for his service. He not only served on the council, he moved snow during blizzards, supervised the water, sewer and electrical services, was mayor pro tem for a time when Frank Tiefenthaler stepped down from office, and helped hang transformers and read meters when it was needed. He served on the Landfill Committee and cared for the Wall Lake Cemetery for many hears. He will be dearly missed by many. Survivors include his nephew and nieces; extended family; and many friends. Virtus was preceded in death by his parents; wife Betty; brothers: Virgil, Verial and Verlin; and sisters: Vivalee (Edward) Pickhinke and Valaria (Melvin) Meister.
