Bio

Helen M. Ruzicka, 98, of Grand Island went to her Heavenly home Sunday, July 26, 2015 at CHI Health-St. Francis. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Leo’s Catholic Church. Celebrating Mass will be Father Donald Buhrman. Burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family. Mrs. Ruzicka was born on the family farm near Chapman, NE, June 23, 1917 to Frank and Frances (Nabity) Janky. Survivors of the immediate family are her children, Donald Ruzicka of Grand Island, Jeanette “Jan” and Warren Wheeler of Cape Coral, FL, Daughter-in-law Irene (Chris) Ruzicka of Trappe, MD, Joann (Jo) Riecker-Karl and her husband Randy Karl of Lincoln, Charlene (Cheryl) and Norman Nietfeldt of Grand Island, Doris and Chuck Winkler of Grand Island and Susan Stueben of Grand Island; 17 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren and a nephew Charles Jisa, of Grand Island, who was raised by Helen and Joe. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe on October 14, 2001; sons, Joseph and Raymond; daughter, Victoria; sons-in-law, Wayne Riecker and Tim Stueben; sister, Rosemary Mullen and brothers, George, Francis and Joseph Janky. She was raised on the family farm attending District 29 and Chapman High School, class of 1935. On June 2, 1937 she married Joe Ruzicka of Polk, NE. They made their home on a farm north of Polk. In 1947 they moved to her family farm near Chapman. In 1968 they moved to Grand Island. Helen worked at Grand Island Senior High, Graf Pontiac and Johnson Cash-way. Most of all she was a wonderful homemaker taking care of her family and was famous for her kolache's and dill pickles. She loved music and dancing. She played the piano and drums in several family bands and accompanied her husband Joe as he played the violin. Her hobbies included gardening, canning, and sewing. She was a choir member and organist at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Central City. After moving to Grand Island she was a choir member at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and assisted for funerals and weddings. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Altar Society and Catholic Daughters of America. After moving to Riverside Lodge Retirement Home in 2004 she attended St. Leo’s Catholic Parish.
