Bio
Joseph "Joe" A. Ruzicka, 87, of Grand Island died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001 at the Tiffany Square Center in Grand Island. Mr. Ruzicka was born on July 8, 194 at Loma to Alois and Mary (Coufal) Ruzicka. He received his education in Dwight, Brainard and Loma. In 1925 he moved with his family to a farm near Stromsburg. He graduated from District 43 School in Polk County. In 1929 the family moved to Polk. He married Helen M. Janky on June 2, 1937 at St. Michael's Church in Central City. The couple farmed northwest of Polk. In 1947 they moved to a farm near Chapman. He served for seven years as president and then treasurer of the District 29 School Board. The couple moved to Grand Island in 1968. He was employed by the Berkeley Pump Company for 11 years. He retired in 1979. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society in Central City, the Platte-Duetsche, Liederkrantz and the Eagles. He played the violin and piano for several orchestras. He enjoyed singing in church and dancing. Survivors include his wife; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Don Ruzicka of Grand Island and Ray and Chris Ruzicka of Trappe, Md; five daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanette "Jan" and Warren Wheeler of Cape Coral, Fla., Joann "Jo" and Randy Riecker-Karl of Lincoln and Charlene "Cheryl" and Norm Nietfeldt, Doris and Chuck Winkler and Susan "Sue" and Tim Stueben, all of Grand Island; a nephew, Charles Jisa of Omaha; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Victor Ruzicka of Whittier, Calif.; and a sister, Helen Janky of Grand Island. He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph E. Ruzicka; a daughter, Victoria Ruzicka; two brothers, Louis and Jerold Ruzicka; and two sisters, Mary Houdek and Agnes Jisa.
