Bio

Bernice Anne Hayes was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on September 6, 1930 at Asbury Hospital. Daughter of Ernest and Ruth (nee Keller) Hayes. Sister of Thomas and John "Jack" Hayes. Moved from Minneapolis to Kansas City when she was 10, then to Arlington, Virginia at 11, back to Minneapolis at 12, then finally back to Arlington, Virginia at 13. Married Harry Elmer Pierce, Jr. on 21 July 1951. They had 6 children. Divorced Harry in June 1971. Harry died in July 1973. Worked as a legal secretary and then, later, drove a school bus for the Fairfax County school system. Loved to sew, crochet, knit, do needlework and crossword puzzles. Bernice died on June 23, 2003 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, Pitt County, North Carolina, at the age of 72, due to complications of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. She was survived by her 6 children and 13 grandchildren. Donated her body for research to East Carolina School of Medicine at Pitt Memorial Hospital.
