Thanks to contributor #46975511 for info. Betty Jean Schmidt, 73, of Grand Island died Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at her home in Grand Island. Services will be at 10:30 AM Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jack Gillam officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 PM, at Concordia Cemetery at Prosser, NE. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Betty Jean Schmidt was born June 18, 1941 in Aurora, Nebraska the daughter of Rueben E. & Hazel L. (Ryder) Ott. She grew up in Giltner, graduating from Giltner High School with the class of 1959 as the class valedictorian. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Kearney State Teachers College in 1966 and her Master’s Degree in 1976. She was united in marriage to Charles “Chuck” E. Schmidt, August 21, 1966 in Wood River, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Grand Island where she taught in area schools for 36 years, the last 24 years at Walnut Middle School. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Grand Island, Delta Kappa Gamma, where she served as President, Platte Valley Area School Personnel, Stuhr Museum, Saddle Club, YMCA, Grand Island Area Retired Teacher’s Association, NSEA-R, and AARP. She enjoyed spending time with family especially her grandchildren. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Chuck Schmidt of Grand Island, two daughters & sons-in-law, Janel R. & Joel Zubrod of Roseland, Nebraska, Jennifer K. & Richard Cady of Surprise, Arizona, one son & daughter-in-law, Jeffrey C. & Mindi Schmidt of Omaha, NE, nine grandchildren, one brother, Gary Ott of Giltner, NE a sister, Billie Foulk of Giltner, NE and sister-in-law, Irva Ott of York, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rueben & Hazel Ott and a brother, LeRoy Ott.
