Herald Coaster, July 30, 1987: Funeral services for Alfred Joseph Demel, 78, of Needville, will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Needville, with Father Ludon Angelle officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, Garden of Gethsemane. A rosary will be recited 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Davis-Dawson Funeral Home in Needville. Mr. Demel died Wednesday. He was born March 16, 1909 in High Hill, a small community near Schulenburg, attended Houston Barber College, and worked as a barber with his brother, Paul. In December of 1938, he married Christine Sabrsula. He is a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, and shipped out of Pearl Harbor in 1944 and served in the Pacific Theater until November of 1945. He later took up the carpenter's trade and was known as a fine cabinet maker. Mr. Demel was the maintenance supervisor at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Houston until 1975 when he retired to Needville at the age of 62. A 50-year reside of Needville, Mr. Demel was an active parishioner of St. Michael's Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Needville Volunteer Fire Department, American Legion Post 350, and the St. Michael's Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Christine Demel; two sons, Kenneth Demel of Clear Lake City and David Demel of Nashua, NH; two daughters, Karen Looney of Houston and Sandra Demel of Boston, Mass.; four brothers, Rudolph Demel and Norbert Demel of Schulenburg, Alex Demel of Rosenberg, and Leo Demel of San Antonio; three sisters, Annie Christ of Rosenberg, Olga Kasprzik of San Antonio, and Frances Kahlich of Slaton. Mr. Demel is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Michele Demel Andrews, Gregory Alfred Demel, Cynthia Lynn Demel, Matthew Kenneth Demel, Kenneth Wayne Looney III, Kristopher Randall Looney, Rodney Michael Ward, Wendy Heather Ward, David Alfred Demel, Rozlyn (remainder of obit is missing).
