Bio

___________________ ~ MARTHA JANE BRANSON HAISLIP ~ _______________________ (Pittsylvania County, VA is divided into 7 Districts: Banister, Callands-Gretna, Chatham-Blairs, "Dan River", Staunton River, Tunstall, & Westover.) “Martha Jane Branson” was born in 1810 @ the Dan River Dist. of Pittsylvania Co., VA. She died on 12-31-1860 @ Fayette Co., Illinois. ________________________ MARTHA JANE was born to "John Branson" & "Jane (Jennie) Norton". Her parents married on 2-17-1800 @ the Dan River District of Pittsylvania Co., VA. They lived in Chatham. They had 8 Children, but only 6 Lived-to-Birth. MARTHA JANE was their 4th. Child. ________________________ HER FATHER: "John Branson" was one of 8 children (7 brothers & 1 sister) who were born to 'Absolom Branson & Jemima Lorton Branson' (who married in 1764). John was born in 1772 & died between 1851--1855 @ Pittsylvania Co., VA. He lived there his whole life. * In 1800 "John Branson" was the ONLY Branson family member left in VA. His father Absolom had died in Buncombe Co., NC 1798 after leaving VA; his mother Jemima had died in Grainger Co., TN in 1800. John's SIBLINGS were either in TN or in IN. John Branson 'alone' stayed in Chatham, Pittsylvania Co., VA where he married Jennie Norton in 1800. * ______________________ HER MOTHER: "Jane (Jennie) Norton" was born on 7-1-1773 to "John Norton, Sr." & to "Elizabeth ?Wilson? Norton". Jane is thought to have died about 1849 @ Chatham, Pittsylvania Co., VA. ______________________ ** Unfortunately, MARTHA JANE’s father John seemed to have trouble with fidelity & his marriage vows to his wife Jennie. Father John was arrested for adultery in Chatham, Pittsylvania Co., VA more-than-once. What was his relationship with his wife & children? I don't know. In the "early 1800's" this kind of public shame may have caused "John’s Own Family's Migration FROM VA". ** THE MIGRATION of JOHN & JENNIE's CHILDREN to other states is therefore understandable. Of the 6 Children, 4 went to Illinois; 1 went to TN; & 1 stayed in Pittsylvania Co., VA. Distancing oneself from scandal seemed important in the early 1800's. _______________________ MARTHA JANE BRANSON's LINEAGE: Absolom Branson 1740-1798 + Jemima Lorton 1744-1800 John Branson 1772--between 1851-1855 + Jane Norton 1773--about 1849 Martha Jane Branson 1810-1860 + Samuel Haislip 1811-1853 ________________________ MARTHA JANE’s SIBLINGS: 1. "John N. Branson" (1801-1880); m: in 1829 to "Cynthia Hunter" (1803-1880); had 10 Children; MOVED to Fayetteville, Lincoln Co., TN by The Census of 1830. 2. "Susannah W. Branson" (1804-1893); m: on 11-5-1823 to "John Crenshaw Bullington" (1802-1859); had 11 Children; REMAINED in the Dan River District of Pittsylvania Co., VA. (Some reports say this family later moved from Pittsylvania Co., VA “following her mother’s (Jennie Norton Branson) death” which was sometime before the 1850 Census. They were said to have moved to Putnam Co., TN sometime before John C. Bullington’s death in 1859. There are 50 unmarked graves in the Bullington Cemetery there; Susannah’s & John C.’s graves may be there.) 3. "William Burwell Branson" (1806-1866); m: on 12-25-1844 to "Mary Ann Pryor" (1822-1878); had 1 Son; MOVED to Fayette Co., Illinois. + William Burwell Branson & his sister, Elizabeth Constance Branson, married Pryor Siblings, Mary Ann Pryor & George Allen Pryor. The Pryor Family had been in Fayette Co., Illinois since the 1830's. + 4. MARTHA JANE BRANSON (1810-1860); m: on 11-11-1828 to SAMUEL HAISLIP (1811-1853); had 7 Children; MOVED to Fayette Co., Illinois. They had 7 Children. 5. “Daniel Branson” (1816-1856); m: on 12-19-1839 to “Cinthia Godsey” (1818-1856); had 2 Children; they MOVED to Fayette Co., Illinois. *** This couple had his father John living "with them" when The Census of 1850 was taken in Pittsylvania Co., VA…there was no mention of his mother Jennie in this census. Thus, it is surmised that Jennie died prior to 1850. (Why not have the daughter, Susannah Branson Bullington, who had remained in Pittsylvania Co., VA care for her father? It could be that his arrests for adultery against her mother soured her “or” that “perhaps her mother was living with her”. Her siblings ALL moved from VA "when" they could). Following father John's death (which was between 1851-1855), Daniel & Cinthia & their children Moved to Fayette Co., Illinois where 3 of Daniel's Siblings already lived! Daniel & Cinthia both died in 1856 in Illinois. There had been a Cholera Epidemic since 1854. *** 6. "Elizabeth Constance Branson" (1817-1908); m: on 11-6-1839 to "George Allen Pryor" (1817-1866); had 7 Children; MOVED to Fayette Co., Illinois in 1843. _______________________ MARTHA JANE BRANSON MARRIED “Samuel Haislip” (1811-1853). They married on 11-11-1828 @ Pittsylvania Co., VA. SAMUEL was born in Franklin Co., VA to "William Haislip" (1765-1848) & "Mary (Polly) Roach m: Haislip" (1785-1862). SAMUEL HAISLIP died on 5-31-1853 @ Fayette Co., Illinois. Their 7 CHILDREN: ~ Mary Elizabeth Haislip m: Shelton (1829-1851) ~ Susan Ann Haislip m: Frost (b: 1832) ~ Lucy Jane Haislip m: Lape (1835-1918) ~ Cynthia Caroline Haislip m: Helm (1836-1878) ~ William D. Haislip (1839-1911) ~ Sarah F. Haislip (b: 1841) ~ Martha C. Haislip m: Arndt (b: 1847) _______________________ “Martha Jane Branson Haislip” died on 12-31-1860 @ Fayette Co., Illinois. Her husband had died 7 years earlier. This particular county was where so many of her Branson siblings & their families had migrated when they moved from VA. No-doubt, her many loved ones mourned her loss. _______________________ ~ Lynda, 2-great’s-granddaughter to Martha Jane’s brother, John N. _______________________
