___________________ ~~ JOHN N. BRANSON ~~ _______________________ (Pittsylvania County, VA is divided into 7 Districts: Banister, Callands-Gretna, Chatham-Blairs, "Dan River", Staunton River, Tunstall, & Westover.) _______________________ JOHN N. BRANSON was BORN in the "Dan River" District of Pittsylvania Co., VA in 1801. The middle initial "N." could be for "Norton" to honor his mother's maiden name (as he was her 1st child). "John N." was born to "John Branson" & "Jane (Jennie) Norton". His parents married on 2-17-1800 @ the Dan River District of Pittsylvania Co., VA. They lived in Chatham. They had 8 Children, but only 6 Lived-to-Birth. JOHN N. was their 1st. Child. _______________________ JOHN N.'s FATHER: "John Branson" was one of 8 children, 7 brothers & 1 sister, who were born to 'Absolom & Jemima Lorton Branson' (who married in 1764). John was born in 1772 & died between 1851—1855 @ Pittsylvania Co., VA where he lived his whole life. * In 1800 "John Branson" was the ONLY Branson family member left in VA. Absolom had died in Buncombe Co., NC 1798 after leaving VA; Jemima had died in Grainger Co., TN in 1800. John's SIBLINGS were either in TN or in IN. He 'alone' stayed in Chatham, Pittsylvania Co., VA where he married in 1800. * _______________________ JOHN N.'s MOTHER: "Jane (Jennie) Norton" was born on 7-1-1773 to "John Norton, Sr." & "Elizabeth ?Wilson? Norton". Jane is thought to have died about 1849 @ Chatham, Pittsylvania Co., VA. _______________________ JOHN N. MARRIED "Cynthia Hunter" in 1829; they are on The 1830 Census in Fayetteville, Lincoln Co., TN. "John N. Branson" was listed as a "Brick Mason". When JOHN N. & CYNTHIA HUNTER BRANSON moved to TN by 1830, he still had 2 living Branson Uncles (David A. who died later that year & Nathaniel who died in 1858) & numerous Cousins in TN. JOHN N. & Cynthia continued "farther SW of Grainger Co., TN" to Lincoln Co., TN "where Cynthia Hunter's Family lived". They had moved 520 Miles from Chatham, Pittsylvania Co., VA where his father lived. His dad (John Branson) had been arrested more-than-once for adultery. When The Census of 1850 was taken in Pittsylvania Co., VA, there was no mention of his mother Jennie in this census. Thus, it is surmised that Jennie had died prior to 1850. John Branson died between 1851-1855; his caregiver son & daughter-in-law then moved to Fayette Co., IL where they both died in 1856. (The full story of John N.'s Siblings is on his father's memorial page…you can click-on his link @ the bottom of this memorial to read it.) THE MIGRATION of JOHN & JENNIE's CHILDREN to other states is therefore understandable. Of the 6 Children, 4 went to Illinois; 1 went to TN = JOHN N.; & 1 stayed in Pittsylvania Co., VA. Distancing oneself from scandal seemed important in the early 1800's. _______________________ JOHN N. & CYNTHIA had lived @ Fayetteville, Lincoln Co., TN for 50 years when "John N. Branson" DIED in Feb. of 1880 of "inflammation of the bowels". This was according to the "Lincoln Co., TN Pioneers Vol. XVIII, No. 1"; but on The Census of 1880 of Lincoln Co., TN Mortality Index, his death is listed as 4-27-1880. He was most probably buried where most of his children (& their spouses) are buried in Forest Hills Cemetery @ Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN with his wife who died later that same year on 10-31-1880. (This seemed to be "the cemetery" where so many of John N.'s relatives were buried for a couple of generations...even though, they lived-out their lives @ or near Fayetteville, Lincoln Co., TN.) _______________________ JOHN N.
