___________________ ~~ JOHN BRANSON ~~ _______________________ BRANSON MOTTO: "While I have breath, I hope." _______________________ "John Branson" was born, married, lived, & died @ Pittsylvania Co., VA @ & around Chatham. His parents were: ~ "Absolom Branson" (1740 MD--1798 NC) & ~ "Jemima Lorton" (1744 VA--1800 TN). They were married in 1764 @ Pittsylvania Co., VA. JOHN was born in 1772 as the 5th. of 8 children. JOHN died between 1851--1855. _______________________ A book was written in 1823 by Samuel David Branson (1814-1890), son of "David A. Branson & Susanna Boulton Branson"; they were Alive when he wrote it! It was called "History of the Branson's". He wrote that his Grandfather Absolom was born in America; that he lived in MD for a while & married Jemima Lorton in VA where he lived for many years; that he moved to Buncombe Co., NC where he died; & Grandma Jemima went onto Rutledge, Grainger Co., TN (Cracker's Neck Valley). * Legal records say "our Absolom" was from an established Branson family in St. Mary's Co., MD; & DNA says "our Absolom" was the son of Michael who was by records the son of Thomas Branson (1635 England--1684 MD). * _______________________ ABSOLOM BRANSON was born in MD & lived in VA, married "Jemima Lorton" in 1764 @ Pittsylvania Co., VA, & had 8 children. His wife did die in 1800 in "Grainger Co., TN" where 6 of her 8 children lived "at-that-time". Son Hezekiah, Sr. arrived there in 1799 (following his father's death in 1798); Michael, Sr. died there in 1809; Lemuel married there in 1806; Jonathan married & died there in 1807; David A. married there in 1806; & Nathaniel married there in 1812. * Exceptions: The only daughter, Rebecca Branson Pruett, married in VA in 1793 & moved to IN where she died while Son JOHN was born, married in 1800, & died in Chatham, Pittsylvania Co., VA (although his children moved to TN & IN). Absolom died in 1798 in Buncombe Co., NC. * _______________________ JOHN's MOTHER was "Jemima Lorton" (1744 VA--1800 TN). She was born in Augusta Co., VA. HER GRANDPARENTS: ~ "Israel Lorton, Sr." (1701 England--1752 VA) & ~"Rebecca ?" (about 1695--?). m: 1723 VA. HER PARENTS: ~ "Israel Lorton, Jr." (1727 VA--1808 IN) & ~"Sarah ?" (not Givens! = on his memorial page it states why.) m: 1743 VA. * REV. WAR SOLDIER from Montgomery Co., VA where he served as a Lt. under Capt. Daniel Triggs Co.31. * JEMIMA died in 1800 in Grainger Co., TN...where so many of her children then lived (as stated above). (After Absolom died in 1798 in Buncombe Co., NC, JEMIMA traveled 100 miles NW to Rutledge in Cracker's Neck Valley, Grainger Co., TN where she died 2 years later.) ______________________ * In 1800 JOHN BRANSON was the ONLY Branson family member left in VA. Absolom had died in 1798 after leaving VA; Jemima had died in TN in 1800. JOHN's SIBLINGS were either in TN or in IN. He alone stayed in Chatham, Pittsylvania Co., VA where he married JANE NORTON in 1800. * _______________________ On 2-17-1800, in the Dan River District of Pittsylvania Co., VA, JOHN "married" JANE NORTON (1773--died about 1849). "Jane (Jennie) Norton" was born on 7-1-1773 @ Prince George Co., MD. JANE's FATHER: John Norton, Sr. (1740 MD--1811 VA) JANE's MOTHER: Elizabeth ? (possibly Wilson) (= his 1st. wife) (1746--between 1776 & 1781) JANE had 2 full-brothers, 3 full-sisters, & 4 half-brothers. JANE was thought to have died about 1849 & "before The Census of 1850" because her husband was listed as "living with his son's family" with no mention of his wife. This was @ Chatham, the Dan River District of Pittsylvania Co., VA. ______________________ ** Unfortunately, JOHN BRANSON seemed to have trouble with fidelity & his marriage vows. He was arrested for adultery in Chatham, Pittsylvania Co., VA more-than-once. It seemed that he went down the street & co-habited with another woman until he was put into jail. What was his relationship with his wife & children? I don't know. In the "early 1800's" this kind of public shame may have caused "His Own Family's Migration FROM VA." ** ______________________ {Please Note: JOHN had a brother named Jonathan (1776-1807) who married Elizabeth Hammock on 5-18-1807 in Grainger Co., TN. Often, people claim JOHN's children as Jonathan's. Jonathan died the same year that he married in 1807 & had No Children! His wife had been previously married in 1805; Jonathan married her in 1807 & died in 1807; & she remarried again in 1811.} JOHN & JENNIE had 8 CHILDREN, but ONLY 6 Lived-to-BIRTH. They were ALL born @ Pittsylvania Co., VA. 1. "John N. Branson" (1801-1880); m: in 1829 to "Cynthia Hunter" (1803-1880); had 10 Children; MOVED to Fayetteville, Lincoln Co., TN by The Census of 1830. + "HIS FATHER'S BROTHERS" had migrated from VA to TN "before" John N.'s move there. ~Hezekiah, Sr. was in TN by 1799; ~Michael, Sr. lived in Grainger Co., TN; ~Lemuel married in 1806 in Grainger Co., TN; ~Jonathan married in 1807 in TN; ~David married in 1806 in Grainger Co., TN; ~Nathaniel married in 1812 in Grainger Co., TN; & ~his Grandma Jemima Lorton Branson died in TN in 1800. When JOHN N. moved to TN by 1830, he still had 2 living Uncles (David A. who died later that year & Nathaniel who died in 1858) & numerous Cousins in TN. HIS WIFE's FAMILY lived in Fayetteville, Lincoln Co., TN, too. + 2. "Susannah W. Branson" (1804-1893); m: on 11-5-1823 to "John Crenshaw Bullington" (1802-1859); had 11 Children; REMAINED in the Dan River District of Pittsylvania Co., VA. (Some reports say this family later moved from Pittsylvania Co., VA "following her mother's (Jennie Norton Branson) death" which was sometime before the 1850 Census. They were said to have moved to Putnam Co., TN sometime before John C. Bullington's death in 1859. There are 50 unmarked graves in the Bullington Cemetery there; Susannah's & John C.'s graves may be there.) 3. "William Burwell Branson" (1806-1866); m: on 12-25-1844 to "Mary Ann Pryor" (1822-1878); had 1 Son; MOVED to Fayette Co., Illinois. + William Burwell Branson & his sister, Elizabeth Constance Branson, married Pryor Siblings, Mary Ann Pryor & George Allen Pryor. The Pryor Family had been in Fayette Co., Illinois since the 1830's. + 4. "Martha Jane Branson" (1810-1860); m: on 11-11-1828 to "Samuel Haislip" (1811-1853); had 7 Children; MOVED to Fayette Co., Illinois. 5. "Daniel Branson" (1816-1856); m: on 12-19-1839 to "Cinthia Godsey" (1818-1856); had 2 Children; they MOVED to Fayette Co., Illinois. + This couple had his father JOHN living "with them" when The Census of 1850 was taken in Pittsylvania Co., VA¡there was no mention of his mother JANE in this census. Thus, it is surmised that JANE DIED prior to 1850. (Why not have the daughter, Susannah Branson Bullington, who had remained in Pittsylvania Co., VA care for her father? It could be that his arrests for adultery against her mother soured her or that perhaps her mother was living with her. Her siblings ALL moved from VA "when" they could!). Following JOHN's DEATH (which was between 1851-1855), Daniel & Cinthia & their children Moved to Fayette Co., Illinois where 3 of Daniel's Siblings already lived! Daniel & Cinthia both died in 1856 in Illinois. There had been a Cholera Epidemic since 1854. 6. "Elizabeth Constance Branson" (1817-1908); m: on 11-6-1839 to "George Allen Pryor" (1817-1866); had 7 Children; MOVED to Fayette Co., Illinois in 1843. _______________________ THE MIGRATION of JOHN & JENNIE's CHILDREN to other states is therefore understandable. Of the 6 Children, 4 went to Illinois; 1 went to TN; & 1 stayed in Pittsylvania Co., VA. Distancing oneself from scandal seemed important in the early 1800's. _______________________ JOHN BRANSON was an unusual character to research. Regardless of his marital flaws, surely, he was loved & valued by some in his family when he passed away between 1851--1855. (Selfishly, I'm glad he had children which accounts for my existence.) _______________________ ~~Lynda, 3-great's granddaughter to JOHN. _______________________
