Alois “Al” Lewandowski, 91, of Grand Island died Monday, Jan. 26, 2015, at Grand Island Veterans Home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Spirit of Life Church, 2304 Macron St. The Rev. Tim Kilstrom will officiate. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, with military honors provided by the United Veterans Honor Guard and United States Army. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Loren and Barb Lewandowski of Grand Island and Scott and Heather Lewandowski of Lincoln; two daughters and sons-in-law, Julie and Fred Hoppe of Lincoln and Alison and Pat Larson of St. Paul; grandchildren, Dustin (Nicole) Lewandowski of Las Vegas, Nev., Kiel (Danielle Juneau) Lewandowski of Lincoln, Jordan (Tom) Waddington of Canton, Ga., Ashlee (Tony) Gentile of Omaha, Whitney (Josh) Dietrich of Valley, Karlie Rawlings of Lincoln, Drew Rawlings of Papillion, Hudson Lewandowski of Lincoln, Ethan Larson and Elijah Larson of St. Paul; his great-grandchildren, Jack, Oliver, Blaire, Emery, Graham, Beckam, Otis and Luna; a sister, Annette (Rich) Mendyk of Grand Island; and a brother, Jim (Donna) Lewandowski of Tracy, Calif. Al was preceded in death by his wife, Irene; daughter, Lisa Lewandowski; brothers, Louis, Andy, Ralph, Mike and Gene; and sisters, Margaret, Sally and Rita. He was born to Walter and Tekla Lewandowski on June 4, 1923, the middle of 11 children, and grew up in the Loup City and Ashton areas. Al served our country in World War II as an Army medic in the European Theatre, in Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, No Appeninee and Po Valley campaigns. On his 21st birthday, he marched through the streets of Rome as it was liberated by the U.S. After returning home from the army, Al began his career with the Bureau of Reclamation. He married Irene Waltman of Paplin and he and Irene raised their family of five. Al returned to the good life and farmed north of Farwell for many years. In 1976, Al and Irene moved their family to Grand Island and Al began the next segment of his career on buildings and bridges for Burlington Northern, a job he loved. Al would retire from the railroad only to pick up another job at FSI, from which he retired twice. Al was a follower of Jesus and led many people to God. He worked diligently as a volunteer for Prison Fellowship Ministries of Nebraska for many years and was a long-term member of Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship. Al was an avid gardener with a thriving green thumb, talented craftsman and fixer of all things broken. He lovingly nurtured his grandchildren. Al made a difference.
