Daughter of Al & Irene (Waltman) Lewandowski. From the Grand Island, NE. "Independent" Newspaper: A Grand Island woman was killed and a Doniphan woman was critically injured in two separate accidents on Hall County highways this week. Lisa A. Lewandowski, 40, died in a two-vehicle accident that occurred at 9:10 a.m. today a mile and a half north of Cairo on Highway 11, according to a press release from the Hall County Sheriff's Department. Lewandowski, who was alone in a 1999 Nissan Maxima, was driving north on Highway 11. The car crossed the center line and collided nearly head on with a 1994 Chevrolet 3500 pickup, according to the release. Don J. Wetterer, 50, of Cairo was driving the pickup south. He suffered injuries that were serious but not life-threatening. Sheriff Jerry Watson said Wetterer saw Lewandowski's car swerving and pulled onto the shoulder of the road to try to avoid a collision. Deputies are investigating the accident, and as of this afternoon, the reason why Lewandowski's vehicle traveled left of center was undetermined. Watson said Wetterer was wearing a seat belt, but Lewandowski was not. The airbags in her car did deploy, he said. Both people were taken to St. Francis Medical Center. Lewandowski was on her way to work when the accident occurred. She was student-teaching at Centura Public School and, along with the school's speech therapist, was working with students in kindergarten through third grade, Superintendent Dave Schley said. Lewandowski was working through Central Nebraska Support Services Program in Grand Island to get her teaching endorsement from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. She had been working at Centura since Jan. 4, Schley said. Notes about the accident were sent home with all Centura students, and counselors were available, he said. From 1992 to 1996, Lewandowski worked in The Independent's classified advertising department. "We were all saddened to hear of Lisa's death," Advertising Manager Sonya Schultz said. "She is fondly remembered at The Independent by many of us who worked with her during her four years in the classified department. Our thoughts go out to Lisa's family during this very difficult time."
