Lafayette Columbus was the oldest son of 10 children of William R/H Herring and Christian Passmore. He married Catherine Utsey 19 October 1854 in Barbour Co., AL and by 1860 they are in Choctaw Co., AL, having 3 children; Mary A., R.V., and William M. L.C. Herring/Herren enlisted by 1862 and is on the list of 53rd Alabama Partisan Rangers. Before 1870 he had followed his family to Texas. He and his brother in law to be, Charley Cravey had joined John Sansom's company of Texas Rangers Frontier Forces, Company C. Lafayette Columbus appears on the muster rolls from Aug, 1870 through May 1871. They were living in Kendall and Comal Co. at this time. Later, Columbus or Lum as sometimes called, married a widow Elizabeth Stripling Forester in Nacogdoches TX and they moved to Medina county. They had a son Graddy. Sometime after Elizabeth died in 1890 Lum married Anna K Goza and she ask later in court for marriage to be dissolved and return her original name. The last note about Lum was a notice of his death in 1905 in Terron, Chihuahua, Mexico and a wife with 2 children mentioned.
