********************************************** Revised 21 May 2024. Joanna's Death Certificate shows that she was born in Georgia on April 5, 1847, while her headstone shows April 15, 1847. However, on pg 2 of her Confederate Soldier Widow's Pension Application (CSWPA), she responded to questions #1 that she was "Sixty-four years old" on the date the application was filed (July 19, 1910), confirming she was born in 1846 and not 1847. Also, in her response to question #2, she stated that she was born in "Barber County, Alabama" - correct spelling is Barbour County and not Georgia. No evidence has been located to confirm whether the actual day of her birth is the 5th or the 15th of April. So, unless proven otherwise, April 15, 1846, Barbour County, Alabama is assumed to be the correct date and location of her birth, agreeing with her responses on the CSWPA and the day on her Headstone. In her response to question #3 on her CSWPA, she stated that she resided in Texas "Since 1859." It has been suggested that Joanna's middle initial "C" might stand for "Christian", which was her mother's first name. Note that "Christian" is also the first or middle name of her younger sister Christian Jane Herring Secrest. According to a Texas Marriage License Record issued between 1817 and 1965, Joanna C. Herring married John Crutchfield on September 1, 1870 in Cherokee County, Texas. When she was 24 years old Joanna's husband died after only 5 years of marriage. She never remarried and lived another 50 years after his death. In later years, at separate times, she lived with both of her daughters and with a few of their children. According to her Mortuary Warrant for her Pension Application, Joanna died in 1925 at the age of 79 in the home of her grandson, Early Howard Rackley, in Corpus Christi, Texas. She is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Devine, TX. At first it appears that Joanna's gravesite is located in an obscure part of Evergreen Cemetery, because it is located adjacent to the fence along Colonial Parkway and away from her relatives.
