****************************************** Helen Settles, 89 years, of North Bend, NE formerly of Scribner, NE died Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at her home. Helen was born in rural Morse Bluff, Nebraska on December 1, 1924 to Joseph L. and Tillie (Mach) Kavan. She grew up near Morse Bluff and moved to Omaha in 1944, where she worked as an operator for the local telephone company and then made shell casings during WWII at Omaha Steel. Helen married Donn C. Settles on August 7, 1946 at Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska. After their marriage, they farmed north of Colon, Nebraska. They moved to a farm south of Scribner in 1952. Helen farmed side by side with her husband including doing custom farm work. She was custodian at District 12 for several years. They moved to North Bend in 2008. She was a homemaker and also a 4-H Leader for 30 years. She was "Piece Maker" at St. Peter Lutheran Church at North Bend. She is survived by sons, Jerome and wife, Joan Settles of Hoskins, Nebraska, Alan and wife, Cindy Settles of Scribner, Nebraska and Ronn and wife, Jana Settles of Raymond, Nebraska; daughter, Janet and husband, Ron Schindler of North Bend; brothers, Joie Kavan, Richard and wife, Dorothy Kavan, Ruben Kavan, all of Morse Bluff, Nebraska and Lester and wife, Marlene Kavan of Des Moines, Iowa; sisters, Maxine and husband, Bernard Kratky of Prague, Nebraska and Joan Kavan of Wahoo, Nebraska; 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donn; brother, George Kavan and sister, Marcella Shestak. Funeral service will be 10:30 A.M., Saturday, November 15, 2014 at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend, Nebraska. Chaplain Colleen O’Neill of Pathways to Compassion in Omaha will officiate. Visitation will be Friday from 2 PM to 8 PM with family receiving friends from 6 PM to 8 PM at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. Visitation on Saturday 1 hr prior to service at the funeral home.
