Settles, 85, of North Bend, formerly of rural Scribner, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010, at Fremont Area Medical Center. He was born Dec. 22, 1924, in rural Cedar Bluffs. He grew up west of Cedar Bluffs. He farmed prior to entering the service. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from March 16, 1944, to May 9, 1946, and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He held the rank of sergeant. After his discharge, he returned to the Cedar Bluffs area and farmed north of Colon until moving to a farm south of Scribner in 1952. He also raised livestock for many years. He moved to North Bend in October 2008. Since retiring, he spent time restoring antique tractors. He married Helen Kavan on Aug. 7, 1946, in Cedar Bluffs. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8223 of North Bend and American Legion Post 340 of Morse Bluff. He was a 4-H leader for over 30 years and served several terms on the Dodge County District 12 School Board. He was a former longtime member of the Knights of Aksarben. Survivors include: his wife; three sons, Jerome (and wife, Joan) Settles of Hoskins, Alan (and wife, Cindy) Settles of Scribner and Ronn (and wife, Diane) Settles of Davey; a daughter, Janet (and husband, Ron) Schindler of North Bend; a sister, Ann (and husband, The Rev. Fred) Huscher of Romoland, Calif.; sister-in-law, Pearl Settles of North Bend; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Dean Settles, Leon and wife, Dee Settles, and an infant brother, and a sister-in-law. The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend with the Rev. Fred Huscher officiating. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Friday and 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, all at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fleming Cemetery near Morse Bluff with military graveside services conducted by American Legion Post 340 of Morse Bluff and VFW Post 8223 and AmVets Post 20 of North Bend.
