E.J. "Ed" Muehlstein, 101, of Abbott, passed away Saturday, March 25, 2006, in Hillsboro. A rosary will be recited at 10 a.m., Monday, March 27, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:15 a.m., Monday, March 27, at the church will Msgr. Frank Miller as celebrant. Burial will follow in Fatima Cemetery near Abbott. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, at Aderhold Funeral Home, in West. Ed was born in Gonzales, Texas, to the late Jacob and Katherine (Mikes) Muehlstein. He attended Spring Creek School in Avoca. On November 19, 1928, Ed married Annie Hykel in West. He was a farmer and owner of Chatt Gin for a number of years. Ed was also a gin maintenance supervisor for over 30 years. Ed was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott, where he "helped build the church." He was a life charter member of Knights of Columbus Council #2305 in West. Ed was an avid domino player, loved to fish and hunt, listen to Czech music, dance, and tend to his garden. He loved people in general, which is why he never met a stranger. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Annie, on August 28, 1975; daughters, Virginia Jaska and Irene Gerik; brothers, Jimmy and Frankie Muehlstein ; sisters, Annie Kutach, Ella Mazur, Agnes Hajek and Lillie Sykora; a son-in-law, Ernest Jaska; granddaughter, Eugenia Muehlstein; and a grandson-in-law, Ernie Janek. Survivors include his son, Edward J. Muehlstein, Jr. and wife, Virginia, of Abbott; daughter, Patricia Zapletal and husband, Raymond, of Ennis; 25 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
