Melva was born on the Feb. 7, 1909, in Baird, Texas. She was the next to oldest of 14 children born to Elmer and Alberta Fortune Mauldin. Melva spent her early years there, obtaining her formal education in Rowden, Texas. At the age of 9, her family relocated to Oklahoma. Some years later, Melva's family again moved to New Mexico. In 1926, Melva met Robert "Dock" Scarborough. They were later married. Together Melva and Dock began their family. In the late 1940s, they relocated their family to Arizona, settling first in Solomon and later in Safford. As Dock worked as an automobile mechanic, Melva remained at home caring for their children. In 1978, Dock fell ill and passed away on June 29 of that same year. Melva continued to reside in the Gila Valley until her passing March 18, 2003, at Mount Graham Regional Medical Center. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother and caring friend to many. Melva was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
