Bio

Walter Jorgensen, 67, was killed Tuesday morning when his tractor tipped over at the edge of an irrigation ditch and pinned him underneath it, fracturing his skull. Mr. Jorgensen had been scraping dirt from the ditch bank in backfilling for an irrigation lateral pipe. According to Sheriff V. J. Beran, who investigated, weight of the dirt and scraper-loader apparently caused the machine to tip on the irrigation canal bank. The accident happened a few hundred yards from the Jorgensen farm buildings four miles north of Ord. The farm is owned by Miner Harris of Palmer. FOURTH TRAGEDY Mr. Jorgensen's death was the fourth tragedy to strike the family in recent years. Sixteen years ago this week, his brother Henry was killed when a tractor upset with him. Two small grandchildren have been killed in automobile accidents. Lyle Jorgensen, Papillion, 14-year-old grandson, was with his grandfather at the time of the accident, and ran to the farmhouse to summon help. The Ord rescue squad was called, but Mr. Jorgensen had apparently been killed instantly. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at three o'clock in the Methodist church in Ord. Rev. C. Jeppesen, pastor of Bethany Lutheran church, of which Mr. Jorgensen was a member, will officiate. Burial will be in Ord cemetery. Mr. Jorgensen is survived by his wife; five daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Jorgensen, Mrs. Lorraine Goff, Mrs. Norma Ptaenik of Papillion, Mrs. Roland Zulkoski, Elyria, Mrs. Eugene Novak, Ord; one son, Harland, Papillion; a brother, Will, Minden, and two sisters, Mrs. H. E. Collison, Bruning and Miss Mena Jorgensen, Ord. The Ord Quiz, [Ord, NE], June 5, 1958, page 1
