Daughter of James David and Minnie Walton Brownlee MRS. SOUTHARD'S FUNERAL AT NEW HOPE SUNDAY (Dec 1948) More than 400 relatives and other friends attended funeral services Sunday at New Hope church at 2 p.m. Rev. H. R. Fairchild, pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church in Lebanon, conducted the service, and Robert Conner was soloist singing "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "In the Garden." Mrs. Mary Windsor was pianist. The family chose as pall bearers J. H. Easley, Roy Gourley, Burley Jones, G. W. McCullocli, C. E. Brown and Paul Johnson and a group of eight young girls carried the flowers to the nearby cemetery. Palmer's Funeral Home had charge of the burial service. Dessie Brownlee was born in Cedar county, August 25, 1880 but came in young womanhood with her parent, Mr. and Mrs. James Brownlee, to Laclede county to reside, the family locating near Orla. She was a member of Fairview Methodist church. She was married to J. R. Southard on October 6, 1899 and with the exception of a few years spent I Joplin lived the rest of her life near Russ. She leaves besides her husband, a daughter, Mrs. P. L. Hamilton and a grandson Richard Lee Hamilton of Kansas City, and two brothers, B. M. Brownlee, Wray, Colo. and Ry Brownlee, Gildford, Mont. Both brothers had visited with Mrs. Southard during her illness. She was active in the church, school and social life of the community and took great interest in political matters serving with her husband in affairs of the Democratic party until stricken by an incurable malady. She had been committeewoman from Washington township for many years. Mr. and Mrs. P. L. Hamilton have been in Lebanon helping care for her much of the time for the last several weeks. Out-of-town relatives and other friends coming for the funeral were Mrs. Zella Casey, Texarkana, Tex., who came by plane to be present; W. D....... Mr. and Mrs. David White and Louis Hinton, all from Joplin, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. White; Mr. and Mrs. Inmon Southard, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Ponder, all of Springfield; Mr. and Mrs. H. L .Davis, Marshfield; Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Scott, Camdenton; Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Johnson and Mrs. Myrtle Smith of Springfield.
