The Grand Island Independent Published Wednesday, September 6, 2000 Barbara Hurlbert BROKEN BOW -- Barbara Ann Hurlbert, 80, of Broken Bow died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Broken Bow. The Rev. Todd Philipsen will officiate. Burial will be in the Mason City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. A Christian wake service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. A memorial has been established to the American Diabetes Association. Mrs. Hurlbert was born on Sept. 18, 1919, at Ashton to Peter and Frances (Czaplewski) Kuffel. She grew up in the Paplin and Ashton area, where she attended school. She married Clemens Szafrajda in June 1936 in Rockville. They lived in Rockville, Litchfield, Ravenna, Shelton and Grand Island. She married William Hurlbert in September 1952 at Burwell. They lived in the Burwell area from 1952 to 1963, when they moved to Mason City. Mr. Hurlbert died in 1965. Mrs. Hurlbert moved to Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow in 1979. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Broken Bow. Survivors include one daughter, Phylis Hurlbert of Broken Bow; two sons, Clemens "Clem" Szafrajda Jr. of Mason City and David Szafrajda of Caldwell, Idaho; four stepdaughters; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Mary McLeod of Grand Island; and one brother, John Kuffel of Grand Island. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one stepson, three brothers and two sisters. Contributor: Starlight (47723180) •
