Lt. Col. Clarence J. Kahlig, Sr. USAF (Ret.) born in Westphalia, Texas on July 31, 1923 went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at the age of 90. The son of a Dry Land Dairy Farmer in Central Texas 30 miles east of Temple, he joined the U.S. Army/Air Force at the age of 19. Clarence battled brain cancer since October 2013. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Elvira Ogden Flores Kahlig; children, Clarence J. Kahlig, II and wife, Tina, Brenda M. Kahlig, Gary A. Kahlig, Sharon Kahlig Perez and husband, David and John A. Kahlig and wife, Kim. He was preceded in death by a son, Tim W. Kahlig, who he cared for daily for 36 years. The Lord blessed him with 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Clarence served in the Military and steadily rose through the ranks of service from Private and retired as Lt. Colonel and retired from Civil Service from Kelly Air Force Base. The family would like to thank all of the friends and relatives for all of their many prayers; as it appeared he passed away in Peace and with little pain. He died while the family prayed the Rosary with his beautiful wife at his side. Clarence before his illness, attended daily Mass at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church and St. Matthew Catholic Church where he served at both Churches as a Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of Holy Name Society, Order of the Holy Sepulcher and Knights of Columbus. During his time in the Military, Kahlig was Head of the Scheduled Maintenance System and a Diagnostic Specialist for the T43, C9, B17, B29, B25, and B52 aircraft. He often was referred to as the "Man with the Golden Pen" in relaying possible fixes to aircraft in his written reports and diagnoses. Clarence was active in his children's life, coaching his sons at the Little League Optimist Baseball Program where he was selected as the All Star Coach many times. Clarence loved to go hunting. His children will tell you he was a tough disciplinarian he taught by example the meaning of sacrifice, Clarence placed importance on family, he taught loyalty, and wasted nothing. The way he lived and spoke made our world a better place. SERVICES Visitation will begin at 7:00 P.M. on Friday, June 13, 2014 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church with the Rosary to follow at 8:00 P.M. The Mass of Resurrection will be on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church at 10:00 A.M. and entombment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
