Bio

George was born and died in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He was the first of seven sons born to William Henry Shirley and Esther Maria Bubb Shirley. George, along with three of his younger brothers (William, Edgar and John) all died in infancy. In 1855, his parents were baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1859, his parents and younger brother Thomas boarded the ship, "Alacrity" and emigrated to the United States. As Mormon pioneers, his family settled in the Salt Lake Valley area of Utah and eventually the Bear Lake Valley in Idaho.
