John Shirley was born in 1876 in Millcreek, Utah. He was the seventh and last child of William Henry Shirley and Esther Maria Bubb Shirley. John, along with three of his brothers (George, William and Edgar) all died in infancy. The Utah Death Register recorded that John died at 14 months old of "water on the brain" (Hydrocephalus.) The death register also recorded his burial plot numbers which indicate he is buried near his two brothers, William and Edgar, who also died as children. All three of their graves, located in the Salt Lake City Cemetery, are unmarked. (See photo of burial site provided by Amy Barry.) In 1855, his parents were baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1859, his parents and older brother Thomas boarded the ship "Alacrity" and emigrated to the United States from South Africa. As Mormon pioneers, his family settled in the Salt Lake Valley area of Utah and eventually the Bear Lake Valley in Idaho. Only three of his six brothers (Thomas, Charles and James) lived to adulthood.
