Bio

Mary Louise Baker, 83, of Grand Island died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at St. Francis Medical Center. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. Richard Piontkowski will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Baker was born April 20, 1930, in Greeley County to Frank and Anna (Trella) Nealon. Survivors of the immediate family include her husband of 65 years, Robert J. Baker; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia and Jesse Vetrosky of Beatrice and Linda S. and Chuck DeLarm of Lake George, Colo.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Sue Baker of Rock Springs, Wyo. and Gregory and Dale Baker of Grand Island; a brother and sister-in-law, Don and Leah Nealon of St. Libory; and seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Those also left to cherish her memory include numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters, Patty Meister, Janette Baker, Bette Welch and Peggy Higgins. Mary grew up on the family farm in Greeley County and graduated from O'Connor High School in 1948. On Oct. 28, 1948, she was united in marriage to Robert J. Baker in the O'Conner Catholic Church. The couple moved to Grand Island in 1950, where they raised their family. During the 1960s, Mary worked at the ordnance plant during the Vietnam War and also sold Avon. Later she and Bob owned and operated Baker Development, from which Mary retired in 1989. Bob and Mary loved to travel and took several trips to Hawai and Arizona, along with cruises down the Mississippi River. Mary enjoyed bowling and played cards with the same card group for more than 50 years.
