HAYS - Francis Henry "Frank" Pechanec, 51, died June 26, 1999, east of La Crosse of injuries sustained in an airplane accident. He was born March 12,1948, at Great Bend, the son of Henry J. and Rose Vsetecka Pechanec. He earned two degrees at Fort Hays State University, and was personnel director there at the time of his death. He had formerly been assistant personnel director at the University of Kansas prior to his move to Hays in 1981. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church and the FHS. Alumni Association, both at Hays, and the Knights of Columbus at La Crosse. He was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and the Experimental Aircraft Association. On June 3, 1967, he married Annie M. Nather at Timken. She survive.Other survivors include: two daughters, Tina Shepherd, Olathe, and Melanie Pechanec, Portland, Ore.; his mother, of La Crosse; three brothers, Victor and Stephen, both of Timken, and Ivan, Wichita; and one grandchild. He was preceded In death by a sister, Anita Pechanec. Parish vigil service will be at 7 p.m. today at Brock's North Hill Chapel, Hays, followed by a La Crosse Knights of Columbus rosary. Funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Church, Hays, with Father Michael Suchnlci presiding. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Timken. The family suggests memorials to the History Department through the Fort Hays State University Endowment Association. Hutchinson News June 30, 1999
