A Memorial Service for Dorothy Jean Wofford, 81, of Missouri City, TX, will be held 1:00 PM Friday, November 1, 2013, at Sugar Land Baptist Church, 16755 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, TX 77479, with Dr. Phil Lineberger officiating. Burial will precede the memorial service at 10 AM Friday, November 1, 2013, at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, 3511 East Alabama Road, Wharton, TX 77488. Dorothy Jean Brod Wofford was born in New Gulf, Texas, on June 6, 1932, the daughter of Revia Marie Barnett Brod and John Elmer Brod. She largely grew up in Wharton and was graduated from Wharton County Junior College and from Hardin-Simmons University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She served on the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention as a summer missionary for 2 years. She also served as pastor's wife, WMU leader, GA leader, soloist and choir member, Sunday school teacher, and youth leader at churches such as Long Lake Baptist Church, First Baptist Church Heights, First Baptist Church Nederland, and East Grand Baptist Church Dallas. In addition, she served as a realtor in southwest Houston for Jim West Properties and Henry S. Miller. She taught eighth grade at Woodhouse School in Palestine, sixth grade at White Settlement in Fort Worth, sixth grade in Alief ISD, and junior English at Lamar CISD. Dorothy was a superior grammarian and loved teaching writing. She also taught ESL classes at both First Baptist Rosenberg and Sugar Land Baptist Church. Dorothy wrote children's books such as My Dinosaur Ride, The Lonely Little Lion, and Awesome Wabbit. She also was a prolific poet, writing hundreds of inspirational Christian poems, nature poems, and poems about people she sincerely loved. Her family was dear to her heart. She was married for 61 years to Dr. Gene Wofford, long-time pastor and Professor Emeritus at Houston Baptist University for 38 years. She stayed in daily touch with her daughter and her son. Sharon's husband and their sons, were very special to her. Survivors omitted Dorothy's friends have been a warm blanket surrounding her life. The people at First Baptist Church, Rosenberg and Sugarland Baptist Church have furnished her with endearing friendships. Most of all, the relationship she had with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was the center of her life.
