Bio

Helen Valentine, 87, of Kearney died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, in Gering. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Spirit of Life Church in Kearney with the Rev. Greg Mast officiating. Burial will be at Highland Park Cemetery in Ravenna. She was born Dec. 21, 1925, in Buffalo County to Albert and Martha (Hajek) Hanousek. On Oct. 27, 1948, she married Gerald "Jerry" Valentine in Ravenna. He preceded her in death. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Barb and Denny Pageler of Gering; son and daughter-in-law, Kent and Kay Valentine of Antioch, Calif.; grandchildren, Amy Plummer and her husband, Tyler, Joshua Valentine, Bradley Folchert, Tiffany Jansen and her husband, Jared, Laura Feyerherm and her husband, Zach, and Jordan Valentine; great-grandchildren, Keaton and McKenzie Plummer, Brylee Jansen, unborn baby Jansen and Eva Feyerherm; stepgranddaughter, Nicole Bolton and her husband, Ben; sister, Mary Pabian of Kearney; sister-in-law, Gert Hanousek; brother-in-law, Lloyd Valentine and his wife, Jean; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She had lived in Gering for the past nine months. She was the oldest of six children. She and Jerry lived in Ravenna for most of their lives. They lived in Chadron for a few years and also in Kearney. She worked as a cook at the high school and also drove a school bus. She worked at Dertien's in Ravenna and later as a bookkeeper for Jerry's business, Ravenna Sanitation. Helen was a member of Spirit of Life Church in Kearney where she served as a greeter. She was a Sunday school superintendent and Bible school and Sunday school teacher for the United Methodist Church. She volunteered as a Red Cross Gray Lady at the Good Samaritan Center, was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and of garden clubs and card clubs with friends. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers.
