Obituary in The Fentress Courier 14 Mar 2012 -- Local business and community leader Sammie J. Williams, age 84, passed away Thursday, March 8, 2012 at the Jamestown Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Williams was born May 13, 1927, the son of Guy and Gladys Williams of Jamestown and was a lifelong resident of Fentress County except for his service in the U.S. Army. In 1950, Sammie J. married Lounell Atkinson and they became the proud parents of two daughters, Linda and Cheryl. In 1945, Guy Williams and Wright Frogge started Frogge & Williams, Inc. and gave Sammie one share of stock and made him a part of the company. In 1972 he and his brother, Jerry assumed ownership of the company until Sam became the sole owner in 1983. In 2003 he sold Frogge & Williams and started Mountain View Golf Course and Lodge. Upon the sale of that business, he began farming and raising cattle, which had been his main interest over the last 8 years. Sammie J. was one of the founding members of the Fentress County Bank and served on the Board of Directors for several years. While in the rock crushing business, Sammie served on the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Crushed Stone Association; served on the Board of Directors for the Tennessee Road Builders Association, in addition to serving on the Tennessee Road Builders Scholarship Committee. He also served on the Board of Directors of the National Limestone Institute and served as a Congressional greeter for 3 consecutive years at the annual convention in Washington, D.C. He was a member of the Jamestown Masonic Lodge # 281 where he served as the Worshipful Mastor for 2 years, was a 50 year member, and was the first master in the new building. He was also a Scottish-Rite Thirty-Second Degree Master Mason. He was a member of the Jamestown United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School in his earlier years. Sammie J. was always willing to help out in the community in times of need, and always supported the Rescue Squad and the annual Christmas Shopping Spree for the underprivileged children. Sammie J. is survived by his daughters, Linda Duncan & husband David of Oak Ridge, TN and Cheryl Crabtree & friend Gordan Shirley of Jamestown, TN, grandsons Eric & Gregory Crabtree of Jamestown, step-grandsons Bryan & Brent Duncan of Clinton, TN, sisters Betty Jean Rose of Cookeville, Mary Bowden of Jamestown, Margaret Tipton & husband Winston of Muncie, IN, and JoNelda Blalock & husband Sid of Knoxville, TN; special friends Eva Taubert and Larry Crabtree. Mr. Williams was preceded in death by wife, Lounell Williams, his parents, Guy & Gladys Williams, brother Jerry Dale Williams, and sisters Mildred Pyle and Joyce Johnson. Funeral services for Sammie J. Williams were conducted Sunday, March 11, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mundy Funeral Home in Jamestown with Bro. Fred Allred and Rev. Thad Collier officiating, with burial following in the Fentress Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers included Eric Crabtree, Gregory Crabtree, Rod Williams, Bryan Duncan, Brent Duncan, and Larry Crabtree. Honorary pallbearers included former employees of Frogge & Williams, Inc. and Mountain View Golf Course & Lodge; Kirby Littrell, Charles ?Chig? Parrott, Ernest Bennett, Norman Shirley, J.C. Copley, Jerry Dale Huff, Frank Davis, Roger Hall, Dana Ashburn, Jim Taylor, Linda Cooper, R.P. ?Chick? Wright, Richmond Smith, Butch Blevins, J.L. ?Red? Upchurch, Guy Comer Pinckley, Ray Lewis, Oscar Young, Buster Stockton, Larry Garrett, Jim Kirby, Scott Kirby, and Judy Norris. The Mundy Funeral Home of Jamestown was in charge of the arrangements.
