Born to Chris E and Luela D (Chapman) Hinkle, both born in Ohio. When he was 17 the family lived in Edmunds CO, S.D., where his dad was a farmer and mother a mail carrier. He had a sister, Grace, and brother, Lewis (1903-1985 IL). In 1920 dad and mom and Lewis lived in Stanfold, Barron CO, WI.
