Bernadene Bauer, 81, of Hazard died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Martin Egging will officiate. Burial will be in the Highland Park Cemetery at Ravenna. Wake service will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the church. Mrs. Bauer was born May 13, 1932, in Bee, Neb., to Hubert and Lucille (Kominek) Chloupek. Survivors of the immediate family include her husband, Alvin of Hazard; a son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Chris Bauer of Ravenna; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard "Dick" and Betty Chloupek of Litchfield; and a sister and brother-in-law, Sandy and Gary Wright of Broken Bow. Also surviving are three grandsons, Paul, Michael and Josh, all of Ravenna; and nieces and nephews. At a young age, she moved with her family to the hills northeast of Litchfield. She graduated from Litchfield High School in 1949. She earned a degree from Kearney State Teachers College. She took a teaching job in Holdrege. She married Alvin Bauer of Sweetwater on Nov. 26, 1960, in Ravenna. They made their home in Ravenna before moving to the family farm west of Sweetwater in 1962. Bernadene was a lifelong educator. She taught at Ravenna for several years before "retiring" for a short time while her son was in high school. During this time, she substituted at other area schools. She later taught at Hazard full time. Bernadene cherished time spent with her grandchildren and family. She truly believed that "readers are leaders." She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Albert Buchman; and several nieces and nephews. Posted in Obituaries, Obits on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 Grand Island Independent
