Bio

Mr. Virgil La Rue, age 98, of Huntsville, formerly of Pearson Chapel, passed away October 1, 2013 in Huntsville. Mr. La Rue was born May 30, 1915 in Crockett, Texas and lived in Houston County most of his life. He was a U.S. Army World War II prisoner of war of the Japanese for four years and was imprisoned in China when he and his fellow soldiers were liberated by Soviet troops. In the Bataan Death March, over 70,000 U.S. and Filipino prisoners of war were forced to march from Bataan to Camp O'Donnell more than 60 miles through intense heat with virtually no water or foods after their commander surrender to the Japanese. He was retired from the Texas Department of Corrections. Mr. LaRue was a member of the D. A. V, Austonio Baptist Church and past member of the Pearson Chapel Baptist Church where he had served as deacon. Survivors include son and daughter in law, Tom and Connie La Rue of Huntsville; daughter in law, Linda La Rue of Crockett; Ten grandchildren, Kevin La Rue and wife Rachel La Rue of Katy, Jennifer Hayes of Conroe, Chance La Rue of Oregon, Randy La Rue of Canada, Tiffany La Rue of Corpus Christi, Robert La Rue and wife Chelsea of Seguin, Leslie Thompson and husband Seth Thompson of Indiana, James La Rue of Huntsville, Melissa Burns and husband Robert of Crockett, William Conley of Arkansas and brother T.W. La Rue of Austonio; 19 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by wife, Thelma La Rue, mother and dad, Tom and Aley La Rue, sons, Ray La Rue, Eugene La Rue, James La Rue, sister, Analee Scoggins, brothers, Carl La Rue, Jay La Rue, Erwin La Rue and John La Rue. Special thanks to the nurses and staff at Lexington Assisted Living Home, Dr Wells, the nurses and staff of the Huntsville Memorial Hospital. Funeral services for Mr. Virgil LaRue will be held Friday, October 4, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with Rev. Ottis Byers officiating. Military graveside services will follow in the Creek Cemetery. Family will receive friends Thursday evening beginning at 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Hearts Veteran Museum in Huntsville, Texas.
