Bio

John, 85, of Somerset, died at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. He was born a son of the late John and Louise Phelps Alexander. He was a graduate of Shopville High School Class of 1938 and graduated from Berea College in May 1943 having obtained a B.S. in Agriculture. He retired in 1979 from the United States Soil Conservation Service, former District Conservationist for Rockcastle, Rowan and Butler Counties and former Area Conservationist at Somerset for Southeastern Ky. He was a member of the Board of Supervisors of the Pulaski County Soil Conservation District a position he held for 14 years. He was a longtime member of the Somerset Rotary Club and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He is a United States Navy Veteran of World War II , a Lt. J.G., Executive Officer of LST # 265, leading the 1st wave of invasion of Southern France, and he saw action in the Battle of Anzio and Mediterranean Theatre's. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans and First Baptist Church Somerset. Where he served as Deacon and teacher of the Adult Men's Class, Training Union Director and served on various Committees'. He is survived by his wife Virginia Gragg Alexander whom he married October 23, 1943 in London, KY.; a son, Dexter & Linda Alexander, Somerset; two daughters, Martha Elizabeth Alexander, Atlanta, GA, Marsha & Charles Puckett, Louisville, KY; a brother, Rev. Roy & Shirley Alexander, Somerset; two grandchildren, Dr. John & Ann Dexter Alexander II, Elizabeth & Craig Miller; and three great-grandchildren, Kathryn Leeann Alexander, Aaron Lucas Alexander, Cole Alexander Miller. He is preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Arlie, Orville, Oather, Harold, Robert Alexander; and a sister in infancy.
