Bio

Daughter of Benedict Rau and his first wife, Ludovica “Louise” Frierdich. Johanna’s mother died shortly before the 1880 census, on which Johanna appears in the household of her widowed father at Red Bud, Illinois. Four years later, her father remarried to Philomena M. Brumleve, and had two more children with her before his early death in 1892. Johanna married Albert L. Raffl at Red Bud on 23 May 1893. Her marriage record lists her parents as Benedict Rau and Louise Frederich. Her known children were: Dr. Arthur Benedict Raffl; architect Alberta (Homer F.) Pfeiffer; Dr. Claude Raffl; Rosalia (McConnell); and Elizabeth “Elis” (Frank) Boriske.
