Bio

The youngest of three knowns sons born to Jacob Rau and Katharina Maurer (nee Krauss), Benedict appears with his parents, brothers, and half-siblings on the 1850 and 1860 U.S. censuses in Monroe County. His mother passed away in 1869, and on the 1870 census Ben was enumerated in the household of his widowed father, along with elder brother Jacob Adam Rau, who by then was married and had two children. Ben first married Ludovica ‘Louisa’ Friedrich in Monroe County on 10 Oct 1871. She was the mother of four known children: Benedict Louis, Johanna ‘Hannah’, Emma, and Louise. Ludovica died 25 May 1880, just prior to the enumeration of that year’s census, on which Ben appears as the widowed head of household with their four children at Red Bud, Illinois. In 1884, Benedict married Philomena M. Brumleve, in Randolph County. On their marriage record, he names his parents as Jacob Rau and Catharine Krauss. He and Philomena had two more children: August and Estelle ‘Stella’ Rau. Ben died at Red Bud in 1892, aged just 44 years.
