Joseph Karl was born on January 27, 1884 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Milo and Katherina Karl. At the age of 11 he came to Nebraska with his parents, and the family settled near Swanton. As a young man he helped with work around home. He was united in marriage to Bessie Kysela on February 6, 192? at Wilber. The couple made their home on a farm between Swanton and DeWitt. Four children were born to this union, all of whom survive him. In 1945 Mr. and Mrs. Karl moved to Swanton and after a lingering illness, he was taken to the hospital where he died at the age of 69 years, 1 month, and 19 days. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bessie Karl of Swanton; three daughters, Mrs. Rudolph Havlet, Mrs. Lumir Belohlavy, and Mrs. Joseph Belohlavy, all of Crete; one son, Robert of Crete; four grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Vales and Mrs. Anna Karpisek of Wilber; two brothers, James and Edward of Swanton. Funeral services were held at the Pospisil-Zajicek Chapel on Saturday afternoon with Rev. H.C. Cordts officiating. Interment was in the Bohemian National Cemetery near Wilber.
