Bio

Evelyn (Karl) Belohlavy was born May 6, 1921 to Joseph and Bozena "Bessie" (Kysela) Karl on a farm near Swanton, Nebraska. She was the youngest of four children. She attended elementary school at District 93. She then attended Wilber High School, where she graduated in 1939. After high school she worked at the Hotel Wilber. During the war, she went to Monterey, California. She married Joseph F. Belohlavy on January 6, 1945 in Monterey, California, near Ft. Ord where Joseph was stationed. They later moved near Ft. Washington. Evelyn worked various jobs during the war including work at a cannery and a hotel. They returned to Saline County after Joseph was discharged from service on January 1, 1946. Joseph purchased the Belohlavy farm from his father on September 13, 1948. Evelyn then spent a number of years as a homemaker and working on the Belohlavy family farm near Pleasant Hill, Nebraska where she raised chickens, ducks, and other livestock and maintained a large garden. After her son started college, she began working at the Wilber Nursing Home in the late 60’s or early 70’s where she was a nurse’s aide and medication aide and continued working there for over 25 years. She received a Senior Achievement Award from Operation Able Workers in 1993. She retired from the nursing home in the mid 90’s. During retirement, she enjoyed spending her time embroidering, crocheting, gardening, spending time visiting with family and friends, spending time at son Roger Belohlavy’s business, Turkey Creek Furs and Recycling, Inc. and baking kolaches on a weekly basis. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph F. Belohlavy; parents, Joseph and Bozena "Bessie" (Kysela) Karl; brother Robert Karl and his wife Velma Karl, sister Helen (Karl) Havlat and her husband Rudy Havlat, sister Rose (Karl) Belohlavy and her husband Lumir Belohlavy; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Josephine Slama; nephews Dennis Belohlavy, Gene Slama, Richard Slama, Lonnie Karl, Doug Karl, Randy Karl and their families; and niece Trudy Odvody and her family. Funeral services were held at Kuncl Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 20 with officiator Rev. Mark Richardson, organist Patricia Butt, soloist Elmer Nemec with musical selections Sejdem Se, Amazing Grace, and The Old Rugged Cross. Pallbearers were grandson-in-law Jeremy Karr, nephews Lonnie Karl, Doug Karl, Randy Karl, Richard Slama, and Gene Slama. Honorary pallbearers were nephew Dennis Belohlavy and niece Trudy Odvody.
