Bio

Robert Karl, 86, of Crete died Monday, July 28, 2003. He was born May 16, 1917 in Saline County near DeWitt to Joseph and Bessie (Kysela) Karl. Robert left school after the eighth grade to help on the family farm. He served in the 2738th Company of the Civilian Conservation Corps which was initiated by Franklin D. Roosevelt in the late 1930s. Bob served in the U.S. Army in the 597th Anti-aircraft Battalion from July 18, 1941 to January 2, 1946 when he was honorably discharged as a Tech IV. While in the service, he married Velma Clara Amelia Schachenmeyer on July 22, 1942. He originally was stationed in Texas and Virginia, and then served overseas in the European Theatre during World War II while Velma remained with family in Clatonia. Upon returning from the service, Bob and Velma moved to Crete where he worked as a mechanic at the Fairmont Creamery for 15 years. Later, he worked at Foreman's Transfer until he retired. As a young man, Bob was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed following Husker football. He was proud of his Czech heritage and enjoyed listening to polka music. After many years of regular attendance at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Robert became a member on April 11, 1965 and was confirmed with his twin sister, Rose and her husband, Lumir Belohavy. He moved to the Crete Manor this past year. He and Velma celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on July 22. He is survived by his wife, Velma; daughter and son-in-law, Trudy and Dennis Odvody of Pleasant Dale; sons and daughters-in-law, Lonnie and Joyce Karl of Dorchester, Randy and Joann Karl of Lincoln, Douglas and Sandi Karl of Crete; grandchildren, Corey Odvody and Joel Odvody of Omaha, Marcia Hunter and Camie Williby of Lincoln, Jamie Karl of Washington DC, Shannon Karl, Matt Karl, Luke Karl, Nate Karl, all of Lincoln; great-grandchildren, Brandan and Noah Hunter and Chase and Cayla Williby; sister, Evelyn Belohlavy; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Irma and Henry Baehr; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Helen Havlat, Rose Belohavy; and infant daughter, Barbara. Funeral services were August 1 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor James Ernst officiating. The Ambassadors of Harmony were accompanied by Leoda Yost. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery. Military Honors were conducted by Crete VFW Post 4959. Pallbearers were Corey Odvody, Jamie Karl, Joel Odvody, Matt Karl, Luke Karl, and Nate Karl. Honorary pallbearers were Marcia Hunter, Camie Williby, and Shannon Karl. Memorials are to Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Source: The Crete News, August 6, 2003
